Session Brief:

Youth is the cornerstone for development, and as 2 million young Bangladeshis join labor force every year, a structural shift in employment model is an imperative. Bangladesh Government is continuously exploring new avenues to accommodate the rising demand of inclusive and quality jobs for youth.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) of Bangladesh has the proven capability to have significant impact in mitigating various employment issues.

Now it is a global industry with worth over US$500 billion, and it is opening up the dynamic opportunities for the young workforce. Contrary to the popular belief, BPO industry is not just limited to call centers. When an element of outsourcing is involved in Telecommunications, banks, insurance, hospital, back office of hotels, human resource, IT, accounts, then it part of larger BPO. For instance, delivering e-commerce products will be one of the major earning sources for post offices as a huge amount of assets and a large number of human resources have been left unused for years.

E-commerce entrepreneurs have started using infrastructure of the post office, which has the largest delivery network with about 9,000 post offices, mostly situated in remote rural areas. Different products were delivered against orders made through ajkerdeal.com, priyoshop.com and bagdoom.com under a pilot project jointly taken by the postal department and the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB).

Thus, BPO presents itself with a unique opportunity to create a comprehensive platform in youth employment and facilitate government’s initiative of Vision 2021 and achieve the electoral pledge- “Bangladesh on the March to Prosperity”
